Uncertainty in Physical Measurement: An Introduction to Data Analysis in the Physics Laboratory presents an introduction to uncertainty and some common methods of data analysis. This book will serve the reader well by bridging the gap between didactic textbooks and highly specialized monographs. The book is divided into three parts. The first part is a casual introduction to measurement and uncertainty: characteristics of instruments, various sources of uncertainty and related expressions, histograms and distributions, and unified expressions of uncertainty. The second part is an introduction to probability theory, random variable distributions and basic statistical tools. The third section introduces the reader to some basic methods of data analysis: uncertainty distribution, least squares fit, chi-square test, and confidence intervals to name a few. Probability and statistical tools are introduced on an ad hoc basis, as a natural response to problems arising in laboratory practice. The author has made a concerted effort to guarantee both accuracy and clarity through the introduction of a large number of figures and worked examples, many of them drawn from laboratory experiments and practice. The book is enriched with a detailed proposal of several simple experiments. Paolo Fornasini is Professor of Physics at the University of Trento in Italy. He is the author with Giuseppe Dalba of Esercizi di Fisica: Meccanica e Termodinamica (Springer 2006).
